The Fun of Dominoes
A domino is a small flat rectangular block used as a gaming piece. Dominoes are generally made of bone or wood, but plastic and other materials are also used. They are used to play a variety of games, similar to playing cards or dice. Most domino games fall into two categories: blocking and scoring. Blocking games, such as matador, chicken foot and Mexican train, involve placing one or more tiles on top of each other to prevent opponents from playing their pieces; scoring games, such as bergen and muggins, determine points by counting the number of pips (spots on a domino) in the losing player’s hand.
The most common domino sets feature 28 tiles. These are arranged in the pattern of the numbers on six-sided dice. Each domino has one unique face, and because blank ends are not used they can have anywhere from zero to six spots. In addition, each side of a domino has either a number or a blank, which makes it belong to one suit or the other. Most players use a double-six set, although larger sets are also available.
The earliest dominoes were likely developed by children to play simple positional games, and they may have been introduced into Europe during the mid-18th century. By the early 19th century, however, they were becoming increasingly popular as a game for adults. They were often played in parlors and dining rooms to pass the time.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, dominoes were popular with military officers and railroad workers. They were also a favorite pastime of children, and they continue to be a favorite of many youngsters today.
A popular way to introduce children to dominoes is with a set of jumbo-sized wooden tiles. These are a bit more challenging to handle than the smaller standard size, and children enjoy trying to set them up so that they all fall together. Some jumbo-sized sets include special stands to help keep the tiles upright while they are not being used.
Besides being fun, dominoes can also be useful educational tools. For example, some people have begun using them to teach basic addition and subtraction. Others have created games based on number recognition and multiplication. There are even a few games that can help with spelling and word pronunciation.
Domino’s has been focused on implementing innovative technology over the past few years. It has changed how customers order pizza (by phone, online, via twitter or even texting an emoji); how they monitor the status of their delivery; and how they manage their stores.
In addition to Domino’s innovation, they have been investing in a new leadership style that focuses on making great leaders rather than finding the best management style. This approach has been a huge factor in the company’s growth. It has helped to create a more engaged workforce and increase customer satisfaction. As a result, Domino’s has seen revenue growth for 30 consecutive quarters.
